Why These Alabama Voters Are Sticking By Roy Moore (HBO)

Written by

These are the views of twelve conservative voters who gathered inside a Birmingham coffee house Thursday for a candid discussion about the senate race in their state. Voters dismissed many of the allegations against Moore — while saying behavior that was acceptable in Alabama decades ago shouldn’t be measured by modern standards.

“Forty years ago in Alabama, there’s a lotta mamas and daddies that would be thrilled that their 14 year-old was getting hit on by a district attorney,” one voter said. “There was still clothes on,” another voter said of the first allegations against Moore. “As soon as the girl said she wasn’t comfortable, he took her home.”

The panel was compiled and moderated by Frank Luntz, the Republican pollster well known for arranging focus groups with GOP voters.

This segment originally aired Dec. 8, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

  • "40 years ago in Alabama, there's a lot of mommas and daddies that would be thrilled that their 14 year old was getting hit on by a District Attorney." 40 years ago Roy Moore would have been 30 years old. Invite a 30 year old over to your house to canoodle with your 14 year old daughter and then get back to me.

  • Republicans are a threat to fair elections!
If they don't win, they think they have been cheated.
Elections have consequences unless they lose.
Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated that they have abandoned the democratic values that this country was founded on. The law and the Constitution are not enough to safeguard democracy if delusional votes are willing to believe Republican propaganda and ludicrous conspiracy theories.

  • I think these people might seriously have been disconnected from the rest of the world. It's actually hard to fathom people with such a limited point of view. Their perspective is so narrow I feel discouraged from even wanting to try and broaden it. But who cares, it is what it is.

  • Their beliefs are so entrenched that the more facts you give them, the more they will dig their heals in. This is quite frightening and it's the reason why an unintelligent,
ignorant, racist man like Trump can get elected by just repeating what these people want to hear.

  • I grew up religious – private school, bible study, mass 3 times a week – the full meal deal, but I never knew people who CLAIMED to be religious who knew so little of the BASICS. These people are ready to FORGIVE Roy, but what does one have to do BEFORE we can offer them forgiveness? Secondly, I am ashamed at how cowardly this panel is. To clarify, only one comes out and says her stance on abortion is the reason she is supporting Roy Moore. Judge Moore will continue to ban 9 month abortions, but we don't have any voting record for Doug Jones on that topic. These people are ready to forgive an accused pedofile all because they are so dead set against abortion, but the cowardice comes in the fact that none of them admit it.

  • The Democrats have done a good job brainwashing the African American community in to thinking they are best for them but its simply not true. Every civil rights advancement in this country all the way back to Lincoln came through the republicans. Nixon started affirmative action. The Democrats started the KKK. Don't let them fool you research it.

  • LoL, race relations in Alabama were so good because black people weren't allowed to live in the same places as white people. The better question is why did you vote for a man who was forcibly removed from the Alabama Supreme Court twice, for violating US law, a US Supreme Court order and for violating the Constitution. What more do you need to think Roy Moore is not a good politician? Literally removed from office for violating a Supreme Court order, that is literally treason, how can you still support him?
